To keep your move efficient and manageable, it’s best to begin preparations 3–4 weeks in advance. Use our timeline below to pace yourself and make sure no detail gets overlooked.

📅 1 Month Before Your Move

• Create an inventory of everything you plan to move
• Donate, sell, or dispose of items you no longer need
• Reserve elevator access and confirm truck parking if required
• Notify your insurance providers and update or transfer policies
• Double-check if your move qualifies for any tax deductions
• Submit a change-of-address form with the post office
• Alert important contacts and service providers about your move
• Schedule utility disconnections and service cutoffs

📦 2 Weeks Before Your Move

• Purchase boxes, tape, and packing materials
• Arrange professional prep for large appliances (washer, fridge, etc.)
• Have curtains, rugs, or fabric furnishings cleaned professionally
• Get antique or high-value items appraised and documented
• Identify items that movers legally can’t transport (aerosols, chemicals, fireworks)

🕒 1 Week Before Your Move

• Inspect furniture for any existing scratches or damage
• Clearly label important or high-priority boxes
• Empty and clean your refrigerator and freezer
• Drain garden hoses and lawn equipment
• Coordinate appliance delivery for your new home
• Plan how you’ll safely transport houseplants
• Finalize travel plans for family members and pets

🚛 Moving Day Checklist

• Mark “last load” boxes — they’ll be first to unload
• Gather loose or leftover items into a single box
• Unplug all electronics and wrap cords securely
• Take down all wall art and framed pieces
• Label every box with its destination room
• Empty drawers of anything heavy or breakable
• Remove decorations or items from the tops of furniture
• Double-check all closets, cabinets, and drawers
• Take apart bed frames and other large furniture
• Pack an “essentials box” with what you’ll need right away
• Turn off lights, shut all windows, and lock doors
• Hand over your house keys
• Do a final walk-through to make sure nothing’s left behind
